SHAD

Eastern North Carolina's Iconic Migratory Species

Each Spring our rivers play host to one of the east coast's most unique migrations. Two major species of Shad migrate from their ocean homes to our inland rivers to spawn. Both of these species, American and Hickory Shad, can be found in abundance in our coastal river systems.

These fish provide us with a multitude of angling opportunities from late February through April. Whether you're a seasoned fly angler, or a complete beginner - our shad fishery has something for you.
